Renewable forms of energy are on the verge of leaving the ecological niche for the mass market. Whether venture capitalists, multinational oil companies or governmental institutions the enormous ecological and economic potential of new energy technologies has already been recognized on a wide front. Although the production of electricity from the sun, wind, water and biogas has received much attention, few companies have been successful in winning consumers for these products.

However, it is exactly here that the market opportunity lies: in tapping the consumer's desire for a supply of sustainable energy and in responding with attractive, customized solutions.

Whereas in the USA the "National Green Power Marketing Conference" is already entering its sixth round, the Institute for Economy and the Environment of the University of St. Gallen (IWÖ-HSG) and its partners are with the St. Moritz conference establishing a scientifically based and practically oriented marketing platform for the European Green Power Market for the first time.

The VWEW sees a chance here for companies to meet customers wishes for sustainable forms of energy. The prerequisites for this are independent quality-assurance criteria for the certification of electricity and innovative marketing to develop the economic significance of green power and implement new strategies. St. Moritz is fully committed to renewable energy, in the firm belief that the use of renewable resources helps safeguard nature and ensure a clean environment. This is a number-one priority for a tourist resort, especially one like St. Moritz, which requires a great deal of energy owing to its altitude and structure.

The 1st European Conference on Green Power Marketing 2001 is part of a broader project, Clean Energy St. Moritz, geared to a horizon of 8 to 10 years and designed to promote the use of energy from water, wind, solar and biomass resources.
