During his career as a scientist, Stefan Nowak acquired a broad technical and theoretical grounding through his work in various fields of physics, materials science and energy research. His postdoctoral career took him to the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (Netherlands), where he worked with Philips on industrial projects. As Senior Assistant at the University of Fribourg he played a key role in setting up the solid-state physics research unit.
Since 1990, Stefan Nowak has worked on issues concerning the implementation of research and technology in marketable products. In this context, between 1992 and 1996 he was responsible for the Polygon industry liaison office at the University of Fribourg. Since 1993 he has led the Swiss photovoltaic research programme on behalf of the Federal Office for Energy.
In 1996 Stefan Nowak founded his own company, aimed at offering a comprehensive range of services in the field of renewable energy. NET Nowak Energie & Technologie AG covers a broad spectrum from research and technology to marketing and communications, offering consulting services both in Switzerland and abroad. The company is also involved in various EU projects related to renewable energy.
Stefan Nowak represents Switzerland in the worldwide Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS) established by the International Energy Agency (IEA), and since 2001 has chaired the programme. The numerous international contacts this has afforded have given him a deep insight into worldwide developments in renewable energy and the relevant market mechanisms.
